Your First CrossFit Class at Fortius: What Actually Happens
Walking through the door is the hardest part. Not the workout. Not the barbell. The door.
I've watched it play out for 14 years. People read our reviews three times before they fill out the form. They wait for the perfect week. They tell themselves they'll come in once they're in better shape.
Fair. CrossFit has a reputation, and some of it is earned. The internet is full of muscle-ups, heavy barbells, and people lying flat on the floor after a workout. If that's your whole picture of it, staying home makes sense.
Here's what that picture leaves out. You don't get in shape to start CrossFit. You start, and getting in shape is what happens next.
I was an engineer before I was a coach, so I'll give you what I'd want: the specs. Here's exactly what your first class at Fortius in Point Loma looks like, start to finish.
Before you walk in
Book your first class through the Free Week page. Show up 15 minutes early and check in at the front desk. Bring water and shoes you can train in.
That's the whole list. You don't need to feel motivated. You need a class on the calendar.
The first 15 minutes
A coach meets you at the whiteboard. They learn your name, ask what brought you in, and ask about injuries.
Tell them everything. The knee that clicks. The shoulder you tweaked in 2019. The back that hates mornings. That isn't complaining. It's information, and a good coach needs it before you pick up anything heavy.
The next 60 minutes
Every class runs the same way: a warm-up, a strength piece, and the workout of the day.
The workout on the board is written four ways, Level 1 to Level 4. Your coach helps you pick a level and swaps any movement that isn't right for you yet. Can't do a pull-up? You don't need one. You'll do a version that builds toward it.
I want to be clear about this part. Scaled is not watered down. Scaled is the right dose for where you are today, and it's how everyone in the room got to where they are.
Beginners and veterans train in the same class, on the same clock, at different levels. Nobody is watching your numbers. Your coach is watching your form.
What day one is not
Day one is not a test. Nobody asks you for a max lift. Nobody pushes you into one more ugly rep. Nobody expects you to keep up with the person next to you.
The goal is not to survive the workout. The goal is to learn the movements, move well, and leave wanting a second class.
If you want more runway
Some people want more time before a group class. That's a smart call, not a weak one. Kickstart gives you a personal introduction and tour, plus two 75-minute 1-on-1 sessions with a coach, so you learn the movements before you jump in. It's also the right way back after an injury or a long break. Details are on the Kickstart page.
If you like the effort but don't care about gymnastics or complex barbell work, ask about our Fitness Track. Same intensity, simpler movements, built on the basics: squats, deadlifts, presses, and cleans.
Your first week is free
The Free Week is 7 days of coached classes, free. It's for people who live in San Diego, or are moving here, and are thinking about joining. One per person.
Sign up at crossfitfortius.com/free-week-trial, then pick your first class on the next page. It takes about a minute. The full class schedule is here.
Every member we have started with one class. Every one of them stood outside that door first, a little nervous, a little out of shape, and not sure they belonged.
The door is the hardest part. The rest is coaching.
